Essential Documents for Obtaining a Family Residence Permit in Turkey

Applying for a family residence permit in Turkey involves gathering a range of specific documents to ensure a smooth process. Whether you are a foreign resident or a Turkish citizen sponsoring a family member, having the correct paperwork can make your experience much more manageable. Here’s an overview of the essential documents required by Turkish immigration authorities.

Common Documents Needed from the Foreigner

For foreign residents, the following documents must be provided when applying for a family residence permit:

  1. Residence Permit Application Form
This form must be signed by the foreigner or their legal representative to authenticate the application.
  2. Passport or Substitute Document
You will need both the original and a photocopy of your passport or any official identification document that substitutes for a passport. Be sure to include pages with your photo, identity details, and any recent immigration stamps.
  3. Four Recent Photos
These photos should be biometric, taken within the last six months, and against a white background. Selfies, family photos, and outdated images are not acceptable.

Important Documents from the Sponsor

If a Turkish citizen or a resident of Turkey is sponsoring the applicant, additional documents are required. The sponsor must also be present during the application submission. Essential documents from the sponsor include:

  1. Passport or Identification Document
Similar to the applicant, the sponsor must provide their original passport and a photocopy. If they hold a blue card or work permit, those documents should also be included.
  2. Financial Capacity Proof
Sponsors must submit an official, signed document that verifies they can provide sufficient financial support for the foreign family member throughout their stay.
  3. Health Insurance
Comprehensive health insurance covering all family members is mandatory. This could be from Turkey’s Social Security Institution, under a private health insurance plan, or through bilateral social security agreements.
  4. Criminal Records
Applicants who have resided in Turkey for over five years can obtain this from Turkish judicial authorities. If acquired abroad, it must be Apostilled and translated by a notary.
  5. Address Registration Proof
A document proving the applicant’s registration in Turkey’s Address Registration System is also required.

Additional Documents for Specific Circumstances

Different family members, such as spouses, children, or dependent children of the sponsor, may require supplementary documents:

  • Marriage Certificates for spouses.
  • Parental Consent Declarations in cases where only one parent is present.
  • Guardianship Documents for minor children if the parents are divorced.

Marriage and birth certificates obtained abroad must be Apostilled and accompanied by a Turkish-translated, notary-certified copy. It’s essential to plan for these in advance, as gathering such documents may require time.

Document Requirements for Different Living Arrangements

Whether staying in rented accommodation, a dormitory, or with a third party, each situation requires different paperwork:

  • Rental Agreement: Attach a notarized copy of your rental agreement.
  • Third-Party Residence: If staying in someone else’s home, submit a notarized consent from the homeowner, as well as their spouse if applicable.
  • Hotel or Dormitory Stays: Provide signed and sealed proof of residency.
